1 Lombard Street Brasserie, EC3V – Modern European (Nrst Station/Tube Bank) There could be few better uses for a big old banking hall than this showy, stylish and rather noisy City brasserie, less formal than its sister restaurant and much appreciated for that very reason: while the fine diner is the place to impress, the brasserie is about letting off steam in civilised fashion. A long and eclectic modern European menu offers everything from a starter of grilled Provencal vegetables with rare tuna to something more carnivorous to follow: Angus fillet steak with seared foie gras, shallot confit and sweet and sour balsamic jus, perhaps. Puddings range from the pure comfort of Hot Chocolate fondant or lemon meringue tart. The brasserie shares a wine cellar with the restaurant – prestigious bottles from the vault include a 1950 Chateau Pétrus Pomerol at a bonus-dependent £1,500 – plus there’s plenty by the glass & a short selection of half bottles. Service is efficient. |
