Soaring classical columns betray the banking hall origins of this handsome dining room, where the splendid architecture creates an entirely appropriate setting for power lunches. Fans praise chef Barry Tonks’s inventive cooking, which combines classic European ingredients to memorable effect. Desserts include pepped-up classics such as iles flottantes with custard and pink praline or a creme brulee with rhubarb sorbet. Fixed-price deals keep a lid on lunch prices while service wins much praise. Ask for one of the widely spaced tables around the edge of the room if you’re after confidentiality. The bar serves top-notch cocktails and tapas-style snacks throughout the day.
