Even if you’re not looking for a new job right now, you still want to progress in your career. But what if you are overworked? The truth is, it doesn’t matter how busy you are. You can always take steps to advance your career in small ways every day.

Here are some tips to help you advance your career in simple ways even when you are already busy.

Network all the time

Networking is first on the list because it is the most important thing you can do. Make sure you network all the time, wherever you are. See every new experience as an opportunity to grow your network. That is how new positions will arise in the future, and how you will ultimately progress in your career.

Working with a different team? Get to know them and add them to your network. Build your LinkedIn profile, and constantly look to add new people.

Going to a conference? Take your business card and hand it out to lots of people. Talk to people, be friendly, and they will remember you.

And keep in touch with people, especially old colleagues who move on. You never know when they might be able to present you with a new opportunity.

Know your goals

Set your goals and focus on achieving them. You have to know what you want in order to reach it, so make sure you have a mission.

Decide where you want to be in a few years’ time, or even a decade down the road. Think carefully about this and work out what you really want, then set specific targets and work towards achieving them.

Keep on learning

Constant learning is essential, and this is perhaps the most important strategy for improving your career and for advancing your professional life. Even when you are busy, make sure you keep on reading and keep up to date with the latest happenings in your area.

Invest in your own training. For example, do you want to know more about marketing and move into SEO? This could open up many doors, and you can learn online at www.simplilearn.com.

Training is available on any subject, whether you want to move into something new or to develop your existing career. And you can often do it from anywhere online in your own time.

Tell your boss what you want

Don’t let your boss guess what it is you want. Be clear with them because there is nothing wrong with being ambitious and having a goal. If you do your job well, your boss could help you out.

When an opportunity arises, they will think of you instead of bypassing you. As long as they know what you want and where you want to be in your career, there is a better chance that they will be able to help you make it happen. Don’t assume that everyone else knows what you want, because the chances are they don’t.

Make yourself available

When new tasks arise, put yourself forward. When a job turns up that could help you progress in your role, take it on.

Obviously, there is a limit as to how much you can do, but if you become known as someone who your managers can rely on to put themselves forward, this will work in your favor when new opportunities arise.

Show your leadership skills

Leaders are needed everywhere, so demonstrate your leadership skills in your job at every opportunity. This is how you will progress in your career by taking on more responsibilities.

If you can prove yourself to be a good leader, new opportunities will arise, and you will be ready to take them.

Be easy to work with

Don’t make it hard for other people to get on with you. Instead, be friendly and professional, and be a good person to be around. You will find more opportunities come your way when other people enjoy working with you.

Keep advancing your career every day

There are so many opportunities for advancing your career; you just have to keep your eyes open to them. See every new day as an opportunity to learn something new and progress further, whether that is taking on some new training, or making a new connection and expanding your network.

These little steps every day will soon add up, and you will know that you are advancing your career all the time.
