Autumn in the City

What a girl wants? What a girl needs? Presumably we all need a little shopping treat. A change of season is just the perfect excuse to hit the hungry credit card and cheer up the wardrobe.

Boardroom meetings, business trips to New York City and our daily commute that we so courageously embrace – hello autumn! Wining and dining al fresco has been so much fun! But move over summer, we are packing the silk dresses and peep toe shoes away and embarking on a massive autumn style revamp.

In order to put together a few work-wear looks, invest in key staples detailed below. High street or designer, there are fantastic fashion essentials on offer for a city girl keen to make her mark.

New season skirts see the hemline drop. Midi is the new in. This is an absolute wardrobe staple for this season. Not only are they on trend but more importantly, they make your legs appear slimmer. Pencil, tube or pleated – the devil is in the length. Still keen to show off your sun kissed pins? Go for midi style trousers.

Culottes are an interesting trend of wide leg bottoms, not suitable for every office. However worn with classic pumps make a nice, flattering alternative.

Autumn sees the return of tailoring. A good jacket and a fitted suit is what will power you through the winter. Saville Row, Gresham Blake or Next, the choice is wide. Demi Moore in ‘Margin Call’ cuts the dash in a classic, city way. Layering and clean lines in shades of grey to keep it sharp and chic. Tweed and durable fabrics work both on skirt and trouser suit.

Nippy mornings demand a nice stylish coat. A trench coat is a timeless piece and has remained fashionable over years following WWII. Showerproof fabrics and fitted cuts make it an effortless, business perfect cover-up.

Cocoon and oversized coats add a feel-good factor to your weekday walk to the office. A cosy way to wrap yourself in style this season. Colours-wise, mixing greys and textures will give this autumn a new direction. From charcoal to mousy light, edit your own capsule outerwear.

Knits and cashmere add a soft touch of well deserved luxury. An elegant cardi can look the business but choose wisely when it comes to patterns and prints. Wear it over a white shirt to avoid that off-duty look.

Last but not least, autumn sees the biggest change in footwear. I am personally the biggest devotee to towering stilettos; nevertheless I am gradually falling in love with block-heeled courts. Ankle straps however endure a welcome return to the style pages.
