Callooh Callay – Shoreditch EC2A

Callooh Callay is a quirky bar with lots to offer and some great conversation pieces to help those first time meets or ice breakers. It’s also the ideal destination to catch up with friends and check out some of the interesting decor including a mirrored lounge, mismatched furniture and a chandelier hanging from a crane.  The detail and care that goes into their cocktail making is brilliant.  You feel they are conveying a passion to the glass everytime.  Definitely recommended!!

The Folly Bar & Restaurant

Escape to The Folly and immerse yourself in a world of wonder and relax in this botanically inspired haven.

As soon as we walked into the Bar we felt at ease and the City hustle and bustle left miles away.  The staff were welcoming and knowledgeable about everything they had on offer and it felt more like a family than a restaurant.  We recommend this to all our members to try it out.  Just peeping through from the outside you will gain the sense of calm and fun that awaits inside.  A truly remarkable venue!

Wander through their garden lounge and flower shop, swing by the hanging chairs or simply dine at the chef’s table. A sanctuary of calm, their wonderful deli and collection of private vaults make the perfect retreat for entertaining friends.

As soon as we walked into the Bar we felt at ease and the City hustle and bustle left miles away.

An all day menu sits alongside grape varieties from across the globe (that you can even take away with you), skinny cocktails and a mixology table, for those who enjoy indulging in an unrivalled range of spirits.

An amazing and unique revolving pop up shop provides you with something current, seasonal and fun to explore time and time again.

Smithfields Bar & Grill, (nrst Station/Tube St Pauls/Farringdon)

Smithfields Bar & Grill, (nrst Station/Tube St Pauls/Farringdon)

WATC Review: The Smithfield Bar & Grill is a great find. The bar staff were very attentive and the drinks menu was second to none. They not only stock a full range of superbly displayed cocktails, their milkshakes, smoothies and non alcoholic stimulant cocktails are fantastic. The Bar tender recommended a Number 2 Fling which was a blend of fresh raspberries, white peach puree & fresh orange juice. It certainly hit the spot and helped my hangover from the previous night. The prices are excellent if you compare them to the juice bars you see around the stations. The wine was served perfect by the glass at around £4.50 for a large one. The atmosphere was excellent at the bar and around the dining areas with a large mix of women, men, office workers and casually dressed patrons. Well worth the travel to this bar.   We didnt try the food on this visit but it certainly looked good.

Dizzys Bar, 28 King William Street (nrst Station/Tube Monument)

Dizzys Bar, 28 King William Street (nrst Station/Tube Monument)

Dizzys is an independent lounge bar injecting some much-needed glam into the City’s bar scene. The smart upstairs bar, Dizzys Above, is bright and airy with panoramic views of Monument and London Bridge. Downstairs, Dizzys Below has a more industrial feel, softened by comfortable sofas and leather booth seating. Free from pretence, Dizzys has a laid back and casual vibe, friendly atmosphere, cool tunes, and offers some of the best service around. The emphasis is firmly on enhancing the customer experience by providing high quality products both traditional and up-and-coming. Each wine and spirit has been carefully selected to ensure satisfaction of a wide spectrum of tastes – whether you fancy a quick pint, lingering over a bottle of Bollinger, or jump-starting a gathering with a few fresh mint mojitos, Dizzys perfectly accommodates the occasion.

WATC Review: Highly recommended by the WATC team.  You cannot beat Dizzy’s for a relaxed and chilled out place bar to visit with friends. Great staff, great atmosphere and a great selection of food & drinks – all of which are reasonably priced. Whether its lunch, dinner or an event, Dizzy’s has it all.

Wine Wharf, Stoney Street (nrst Station/Tube London Bridge)

Wine Wharf, Stoney Street (nrst Station/Tube London Bridge)

So what’s so special about Wine Wharf? Well for a start there’s the position. Situated next to Borough Market, close to the City and South Bank, we’re two minutes walk from London Bridge station, so finding it is never a problem.
Secondly there’s the atmosphere. The bar is informal and relaxed, with leather sofas, soft lighting and an eclectic selection of music. The building combines a modern style bar and kitchen with the industrial chic of a Victorian warehouse.
Thirdly there’s the wines: Probably the finest selection of wines in the world – Hand picked by wine experts, their selection of wines, of which there are over 400 to choose from, span many countries from traditional France to new world countries such as Mexico, New Zealand and Argentina. The wine list also starts at very affordable prices, and then ascends to our fantastic fine wine selection.

Brew Wharf, Brew Wharf Yard (nrst Station/Tube London Bridge)

Brew Wharf, Brew Wharf Yard (nrst Station/Tube London Bridge)

Tucked neatly into Brew Wharf Yard on Stoney Street, the bar opens up a new oasis, away from the bustling market.  Its entrance is set within the railway arches next to Wine Wharf, and adds a further dimension to Vinopolis by offering an inspired selection of beers.  From cherry to wheat beer, Brew Wharf offers the rare opportunity to sample a wide range of beers, not to mention a impressive wine list.
Brew Wharf has all the ingredients of a successful destination; good location, strong atmosphere, a sense of place, and good ale, brewed on site.

The Brew Wharf also and more importantly, has a micro brewery onsite and for those with partners or like a beer or two may find this place an excellent alternative to the basic drink and eat.

The Firefly, 18 Old Bailey (nrst Station/Tube St Pauls)

The Firefly, 18 Old Bailey (nrst Station/Tube St Pauls)

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Firefly family they started off 4 years ago by opening their first bar on Clapham Common in South London. It proved to be a great success with its cozy atmosphere and welcoming staff, so they opened a sister bar in nearby Balham.  They have always strived for their  bars to be a place people can come to and relax, whether it is over a bottle of wine with friends or dancing the night away to great tunes.   The Firefly City opened her doors in November 2006 and they have had their  hands full ever since. Taking a bit of Clapham, adding a bit of all their bars and a lot of creative and positive attitudes, we have managed to keep that local feel- with the buzzy city edge to it.  Food is prepared by  Tasmanian head chef Eddie Vinney and is amazing.  From business lunches to after work drinks and food, private parties, weddings and late night entertainment with live music and dancing, Firefly provides a new meaning to going out in the City.

Bar Blue, 1 Bank End (nrst Station/Tube London Bridge)

Bar Blue, 1 Bank End (nrst Station/Tube London Bridge)

Bar Blue is the first style bar of this kind in the London Bridge area, the brain child of Trevor Gulliver of St John, Bombay Sapphire, Claudio Pulze and Vinopolis, it provides a further element to the successful regeneration of this gastronomic pocket of Southwark.   The brand colours of Bombay Sapphire Gin have been used, creating an elegant floral pattern that was inspired by the collection of ingredients used in the beverage known as “the botanicals”. During daylight hours the etched out flowers within the blue mirrored surface will have a very subtle effect of surprising the eye which finds them, whereas at night, lighting behind the glass will shine through the floral etching to illuminate the bar, increasing its visibility from the street.

The Gallery Bar – Nr Liverpool Street

The Gallery, 10 Austin Friars, (nrst Station/Tube Liverpool Street)

WATC Review:  You will be surprised at just how big the Gallery is until you go inside.  Tucked away from the main road of Old Broad Street this pub is a little known gem of many city workers.  The pub itself is very vibrant inside with lots of open plan areas so its ideal for groups.  The bar staff were friendly enough and you never seemed to have to wait long to get served.   We ordered a mixed platter for our friends for which included some strange concepts, Battered salmon pieces were a surprise and the quiche chunks were good, although there appeared to be a lot of garlic in the dishes. The platter was good enough for 5 of us and certainly soaked up the great selection of wine we sampled. Overall the pub had an excellent vibe however the food was a tad disappointing.
