The City Women’s Network Annual Conference 2011: Women Leading in a Global Economy
Date: Friday 10th June
Location: Marriott Grosvenor House hotel, London

Though much of the work that is garnering media attention is focused around the inclusion of women on boards, there are a number of other dimensions of the leadership agenda that are as important in helping to create a robust pipeline of talent, both male and female to shape the future of business enterprise in the UK.

Supported by CWN’s corporate members, Lloyds, BNY Mellon and State Street, the CWN conference ‘Women Leading in a Global Economy’ is being held to not only debate and address the practical issues around achieving gender parity at the most senior levels of organizations, but to discuss the issues that affect all business leaders. Our challenging business agenda features some of the most prominent executives in the UK and will debate the resolution of the complexities that will continue to impede progress of all of businesses if not addressed and resolved.

This conference is appropriate for senior women and men from the private and public sectors who wish to engage in the debate around gender balance and parity, discuss the challenges around the extreme environments in which senior leaders work, and who understand that failures often form an integral part of successful business processes.

The CWN Conference provides participants a superb opportunity to network among peers, develop potential client and partner contacts and engage in a lively debate around the issues that impact today’s leaders.

The delegate package includes a full days workshops from inspiring speakers, an exhibition and excellent networking opportunities including a fantastic lunch with a keynote speaker.

WATC founder in Top 100 Rising Stars EMEA

Congratulations must go to our co-Founder Vanessa Vallely for being awarded in the Financial News  Top 100 Rising Stars! This is not an easy List to be in and is open to all in the UK, Europe, Middle East & Africa.  Her work for Aviva Investors and WeAreTheCity have not gone un noticed and deserves this award.

We would like to congratulate and we all feel very proud of her achievement.

FN100 Rising Stars 2010

This year’s FN100 Rising Stars list, our pick of the top 100 executives aged under 40 in European financial markets, has undergone a dramatic overhaul with only 12 stars keeping their places from last year. The sixth annual list reflects changes in the market, including a renewed focus on regulation, emerging markets, capital restructuring, and the increased importance of pensions funds as asset owners.

The top 100 includes more candidates than ever that are shaping new regulation and the industry’s response to it: more than a fifth have been working with regulators including the Financial Services Authority, the Bank of England and HM Treasury in the UK as well as various regulatory bodies in Brussels.

Emerging markets are a hot area for new talent, with a fifth of those making it on to the list either investing directly in, or ensuring they have exposure to, the high growth economies of the developing world.

Nearly a quarter of the FN100 Rising Stars work in asset management and a third in investment banking. Ten work for hedge funds, another 10 in private equity with the rest made up of wealth managers, lawyers, regulatory consultants and those working in market infrastructure.

All nominees had to be under 40, based in Europe, the Middle East or Africa and working in investment banking, asset management, hedge funds, private equity, wealth management, exchanges, trading or firms that support these sectors.

BBC Documentary

Do you want to be featured in a new Documentary?

Are you going on Holiday soon?

Then why not contact the BBC and have the opportunity to have it captured as part of a unique documentary that will be screened on BBC2.

It’s a 60-minute documentary about family life – they’re looking for families going on breaks or holidays in the UK over the summer, who we would be able to film on their car journey to their destination. The idea is very much to get to know the family in the course of the journey (a director would ask them questions, and the whole trip would be covered by small cameras in the car).

The film will include  five or six families, representing a good range of British family life – from step-parents to single parents, grandparent carers, adopted kids, and so on. In this mix they would love to feature a family with a real high-flying mum who is balancing work commitments with family life – for whom the summer getaway is a really precious chance to spend time with her kids.

This documentary is for an award-winning BBC2 documentary strand called ‘Wonderland’ – and it’s being made by the same area of the BBC that makes Child of Our Time, Louis Theroux, and various one-off documentaries like the BAFTA-winning ‘Wounded’.

The burden of a working mum

I shuffle to work on Monday morning running through the mental to do list of things I must have ticked off before another working week begins.  In fact, if I am honest, it probably starts as early as Sunday.

Is the washing done? are PE kits ready?

Have I read the latest school newsletter?

Do either of them have a dress up day this week?

Have I paid the piano lessons  bill ?

Monday is just a double check on the day before with a few added tasks, like did I do the packed lunches and morever, did I shut the cat in the Fridge in my tired haze to get out the door.

I rushed out the door to my corporate existence whilst they lay beautifully sleeping in their beds, all they know is when they wake up, mummy isn’t there to cuddle them.

Inside my stomach is the normal rack of guilt that I didn’t see either of them this morning, I rushed out the door to my corporate existence whilst they lay beautifully sleeping in their beds, all they know is when they wake up, mummy isn’t there to cuddle them.

Morning brings the normal rush of tasks, which in the grand scheme of things mean nothing.  My heart aches till I can leave again and get home to the kids.  I won’t lie, there is a certain element of freedom associated with working that I enjoy, however it is overlaid with part of you that says you should be at home baking an apple pie for their arrival from school.  Your grandmothers voice is firmly in there telling you that kids grow up very fast and before you know it you have missed their childhood and all they do is use a series of grunts to communicate.

Tuesday, is the same routine.  I am promptly reminded the night before that Thursday is bring your mum to lunch day and that I should have read the newsletter that was left of the table, my 6 year old promptly tells me I clearly didn’t read it properly and then tells me to “focus”, oh my god, she really does mirror her mothers words.  Now I am aware of said bring your mum to lunch day, which will be fully of home sneering mums, I am racking my brains as to what meetings I have on Thursday and morever whether I can actually escape to attend, or whether I have to start to let her down gently.  The normal debate reigns with my partner as to whether he can cover, but of course, his meetings are more important than mine.

Wednesday comes, I notice a late meeting in everyone else’s diary except mine, I query it only to be told, we didn’t think you could come because of the kids !!!!  since when has having children translated in to having a career lobotomy !!  I hold my tongue as its just not worth the fight, I will be labelled emotional if I do.

Thursday – I am knee deep in reports, I am never going to make it to bring your mum to lunch day, visions of this little girl waiting on her own for her mum who doesn’t come racks me with guilt to the point of near tears, but I daren’t show it.  However, I am so consumed with the vision and am almost transcending her feelings in to my own body, so I up sticks and go, making an excuse about some urgency at home.  I almost hate myself for not being honest, however, if I am it will just mandate the fact that because I have children I am different, and above all not totally in control of my own time nor fit to take on more responsibility.  En route home, I am now full of resentment for the school for laying on such an untimely event and putting us working mums in such a position, by time I get to the school, I am seething.  I am playing with my blackberry throughout the hour, and it turns out to be no quality time whatsoever, I needn’t have gone, no one has won, not least my little girl who tells me this is her time and to put the blackberry away.

Friday comes – I am in catch up mode from Thursday, still resentful at the school and my colleagues who deemed me too much of mum to invite me their late meeting, I expect they thought they were being considerate.  I am in the mother of all moods.  5.30 comes and I am out the door, wild horses cannot stop me as I get on the train and shed the burden of corporate responsibility on the platform.  I am off home, and for one day, I get to be a mum again, before the to do list of Sunday evening starts to whir again…. And just think, I only have this for another 10 years…

City Rant: International Travelling

Some would say that if you get to travel around the world in your job, it’s a luxury and a perk.  Friends of mine often comment about me flying business class, drinking champagne in airport lounges and lording it up in fancy hotels – based on that naive description its hardly sounds the most painful of experiences.  I often try and tell them that being away from home, shuffling from terminal to terminal and sleeping in a bed for 9 hours made for dopey’s slightly taller brother is not what it’s cracked up to be.  As we all know the air con on planes dries up every moist part of your body and dehydration and crackly skin is more or less issued with your boarding pass.   Bear in mind that even the simplest long haul is a good 12 hours door to door, it’s like 2 days at work in one shift.  I truly believe in what a fellow traveller once told me that for every hour your out of your time zone, it takes you that many days to recover when your back.  For most of us, business class on a red eye flight (that’s the one that goes overnight) means you grab a shower at Heathrow and you are back at your desk by 9.00 – jetlag, what jetlag !

It’s hard graft, mentally exhausting and can be a little scary as a women on your own.

Yes, I am lucky in the sense that I get to see amazing parts of the world, but generally it’s from the back of a cab on route to the hotel.  The closest I get to the sights is the in hotel magazine that shows me all the wonderful things I could have seen if I didn’t have to be in the office at 7.  Let’s not forget the compulsory entertaining with your global colleagues either and the fact you always come back fatter than you left.  If I was at home I wouldn’t be eating for Britain with people who I really have nothing in common with, who want to talk about nothing more than work.  You miss your family, your home, your bed, amongst other creature comforts, and if, like me you have been doing it for years, the novelty kind of wears off and you long to stay stationary, for a couple of weeks at least.  Worse still if you are out on a long time zone and in meetings, you can completely miss windows to phone home, as I have done on many occasions.

Don’t be fooled, a travelling job may sound really wonderful, however, the reality is that it’s a fairly lonely and tiring existence and all you have for company is the keyboard on your blackberry or your laptop. If you have a travelling friend or husband, you will know only too well the texts you get in the middle of the night as us travellers lose all concept of time, and we are often too tired to count 6 hours forward or 5 hours back.

As I write this, I am concious that I may come across as ungrateful for my position, I know I could change it tomorrow.  However, with the world becoming more and more flat, travel overseas has become more and more common place.  For me having the particular skill set I have, travel is always going to be part of the deal, so I either switch industry or put up and shut up.

So the upshot ladies from this particular seasoned Judith Chalmers, if you get a role with global travel then enjoy it by all means, but be prepared for the day it becomes a bind. It’s hard graft, mentally exhausting and can be a little scary as a women on your own. It’s not always glam, there is no strapping fella to drag your over packed suitcase off the carousel and if you are not in seats 1-12 on the plane, your unlikely to get your first choice of meal.  Other than that, enjoy the tag of international jet setter loudly announced by your friends and family at parties and the perception that you and richard branson are on first name terms…

Enjoy… Yours from Chicago Airport..

With 150 choirs nationwide, and a membership of 4,500 and growing, the Rock Choir phenomenon is sweeping the country offering pop, gospel and Motown singing. Membership, although mainly female, is open to everyone with the only qualification being an enthusiasm for singing.

One of the most defining qualities of Rock Choir is the sense of empowerment and belonging it brings its members.  For many, the weekly rehearsals have become welcomed havens through which they can express themselves and escape their everyday life whilst enjoying an entertaining and exhilarating singing session. This positive life affirming experience is a perfect compliment to Refuge’s life changing and empowering work with women who experience domestic violence.

Rock Choir’s début album, Rock Choir Vol.1 is released on Monday 5th July.  Described as the ‘Feel good album of 2010’ it has already gone straight to the top of the best sellers chart as a pre-order purchase, knocking acts like Kylie, Eminem, Scissor Sisters, Glee, and Oasis down the charts.

Generously Rock Choir is donating profits from the track ‘Something Inside So Strong’ to Refuge. Coq d’Argent, EC2R – Regional French (Nrst Station/Tube Bank)
With its spectacular roof garden and understated ocean-liner decor, Coq d’Argent excels as a venue for power lunches, special occasions and possesses a buzzy urbanity few other City venues can match. The kitchen is at its best when producing luxurious interpretations of classic dishes. Desserts included a beautiful, if sweet, trio of warm nut pudding, frozen nougat and praline mousse. The long wine list offers reasonable selections by the glass and half bottle and vast choice in all the main French regions, with three pages of Bordeaux alone.

___________________________________________________________________________________________Brendan Robertson, WATC’s Beauty & Hair editor provides you with his professional advice to tackle dry skin.

The devil is in the dryness and our environment places a lot of stress on our skin from day to day. If it’s not the sun’s deadly says then it’s free radicals causing pollutants or harmful cosmetic ingredients. One of the biggest environmental concerns is dryness stemming from climate-controlled spaces such as the home, office or airplane cabin. Heated or cooled air is usually very low in relative humidity and can literally suck the water right out of your epidermis. Dermatologists used to think that dry skin was caused entirely by a lack of oily film on the surface of the skins. We now know that it’s due to water loss from the skin’s outer layers and to the inability of moisture to move from the deeper layers to the surface. This results in surface dryness and can lead to premature ageing or other skin conditions.

Some helpful ways to avoid dry skin are:

  • Drinking your 8 glasses of water everyday and eating loads of water rich fruit and vegetables.
  • Eating foods rich in essential fatty acids. these help maintain your sebum production and therefore your skins natural barrier against water loss.
  • Not over heating your home or sleeping under a heavy duvet. A humidifier is a great way to keep the air moist. Ever notice how great your skin feels after a steam at the gym?
  • Keeping your showers and baths warm, not hot.
  • Unfortunately alcohol is a huge factor in dry skin, so if you are going to have a few drinks then try to match each unit with a glass of water.
  • Or use some of these great producst essentially formulated for dry skin and some to keep your hair in great condition too.

Political Savvy: The Rules of the Game for Corporate Women

Written by Michelle Brailsford - Click here to read Michelle’s profile on Inspirational Women

What makes an individual successful in the “political arena”? According to Dr. Rick Brandon and Dr. Marty Seldman, successful politicians possess both mental empowerment (they “think and feel” positively about politics) and the skills to build a powerful reputation, network and presence within the organisation.

Plenty of women excel at public relations, relationship building and conduct themselves with style and grace.  All of this comes easy to women.  Research shows that women are more intuitive, able to use both the right and left side of their brains simultaneously and more emotionally intelligent.  They possess the skills that lead to success in the political arena.

Research shows that men are promoted based on potential while women are judged on their track record. If your accomplishments are not visible to others, opportunities are not likely to come your way.

So why do women struggle with “being political”?  As one delegate told me recently in the course I teach, Organizational Savvy: Avoiding Political Blind Spots, “I just don’t want to play the game!!” I wondered out loud,   “Is it all games that you dislike, or just this one?”   She proceeded to tell me that she very much enjoyed games of skill like tennis and golf, games of chance like Monopoly and black jack and was keen on playing games of cognition like crossword puzzles and the latest trend of mind games, Su Doku, a placement puzzle which requires that you place the numbers one through nine in rows, columns and boxes.  As you can imagine, my next question to her was, “Why do you find these games “fun” while you dislike the game of politics?”  She was stumped.

The answer lies, I believe, in two basic facts. First, she considered this “game” an unseemly and unnecessary one to be avoided if at all possible.  Second, no one ever taught her the rules to the game of politics.  Her father had taught her the rules of golf.  Monopoly comes with a set of rules on the lid.  The rules to Su Doku are printed above the game in the newspaper.  If my delegate knew the rules, would she be willing to play?   I think the answer is Yes!

So, here in black and white, I will attempt to codify the rules of the game.

Rule #1:  Like the lottery… you have to play to win

It defies logic that many of the women I coach believe that by taking the high moral ground and refusing to “play the games” that they will win in the end. What other game allows you to win, loose or come in 5th place when you choose not to play?  Being the bench warmer is not a desirable position to hold.

Rule #2: Don’t get upset, get even.

My mother used to say to me, “Don’t get upset, get even.”  I am not encouraging anyone out there to “get even” literally; what I mean is get yourself on a “level playing field“by recognizing the political nature of all organizations and the need to be strategic in order to effectively do your job.  Emotional upset, indignation or denial about the politics that are going on around doesn’t improve your chance of being influential and having impact.  Why not channel the energy you expend fuming about all the Machiavellian behavior into finding a way onto the playing field?

Rule #3   Treat Stakeholders as they would like to be treated

I used to have a boss that would say, “It isn’t wrong, but I wouldn’t do it that way!”  Everyone has their own way of doing things.  We look at ideas, recommendations, and proposals through our own set of lenses.  Either you can convince your stakeholder to buy a new pair of specs or you can polish and present your idea such that it looks beautiful through the specs your stakeholder is currently wearing.

Rule #4   Be Yourself, but Be the Best Self You Can Be

This advice is given by Jessica Miller, co-author of “A Woman’s Guide to Successful Negotiating” about flexing your negotiation style.  You must be authentic or you’ll lose all credibility. The same holds true for being politically savvy.  I don’t want to convince my women delegates to become “men in skirts”.  Know your unique strengths and leverage these to support your success.

Rule #5   A Good Idea Alone is not Enough

Any business knows that it isn’t enough to have a fabulous R&D department.  You must also have a sales and marketing function to go out and sell the ideas to the public.  You probably generate a number of fabulous ideas. But do you know how to brand, market and sell the idea to others? Often, when we fail to get our ideas heard, we assume it must be a faulty idea.  Or the right idea presented at the wrong time. Perhaps it is a case of the right idea presented at the right time but to the wrong person or in the wrong manner.

Rule #6   Don’t light a candle to place it under a bushel basket.

When I worked in the Netherlands I heard this saying frequently; “Tall trees get blown about the most.”  This means if you stand out from the crowd, you’ll be noticed. And in the Netherlands, being noticed is not necessarily a good thing. The Dutch believe in equality; no one is better than anyone else. No one should stand out.  Many of us were raised with strong parental or cultural messages about Self-Promotion.  “Don’t brag.”  “Pride comes before a fall.” and “Full bottles are quiet; it’s the empty ones that make all the noise.” are some examples.

Working hard but then staying quiet about what your accomplishments is like lighting a candle and placing it under a bushel basket.  First, no will see you shine.  Second, your career could extinguish from lack of oxygen.

Rule #7  Past Performance Predicts Future Behaviour….For Women!

Research shows that men are promoted based on potential while women are judged on their track record. If your accomplishments are not visible to others, opportunities are not likely to come your way.

”People are talking about you; especially when you don’t deliver!  So when you do deliver, you better find a way to talk about it!  Your track record counts and the decision-makers must know how many races your have completed, what place you came in and what you are doing to ensure the next win.

Rule #8   The world isn’t fair and the sooner you realize this, the better!

Women, more than men, tend to believe in a meritocracy; that the world is fair.
But some people are blessed with great intelligence; others possess great beauty.  Some of us have access to better schooling. Others have parents who can open doors.  Some of us have natural talents in the area of sports, art or music.  Some of us don’t.  This isn’t fair!

But “time is the great equalizer”, Eli Harari, founder and CEO of SanDisk is reported to have said. And how we use our time determines whether we have an advantage. Take a look at how you manage your time.  Do you spend as much time communicating upward as downward?  Do you spend time gaining operational and/or P&L experience?  Do you spend time managing your team’s brand?  Your own brand?

Rule #9   There are Friends and there are Allies

Women tend to want to work with and build relationships with people they like. Friendships play a significant role when
it comes to levels of engagement.  We know this from Gallup research conducted on Employee Engagement. But all of our work relationships don’t have to be “friendly”.  I am not encouraging you to build relationships with the “sharks or Machiavellians” in the organization.  But don’t fail to form a valuable, strategic relationship with someone at work simply because you wouldn’t choose to be friends with them if you met them in a social setting.

Rule #10  Only Powerful people Can Effect Powerful Change

When I encourage my female delegates to build up their power base, they cringe.  Names like Imelda Marcos, Edi Amine, Hitler, Slobodan Milosevic and Mobutu Sese Seko come up.  Why?  Why don’t the names and faces of Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, Condoleezza Rice, Steve Jobs, Archbishop Desmond Tutu or Melinda Gates come to mind first?

I encourage the women I coach to answer the following questions, “If you had power, what would you do with it?”  Their answers are all about making a difference, having impact and enabling positive change.  They would use their power wisely.

So now that the rules are clear, I hope that the women reading this article will understand the importance of being politically savvy and be more comfortable “playing the game”.  It seems many talented women managers are just not interested in climbing corporate ladders and are leaving to start their own businesses. My hope is that one day I will see more of these powerful women staying and make a real impact at the tops of their organizations.
