Pearls – A buying guide

For centuries, pearls have been a symbol of prestige and elegance. Historically worn by royalty in Europe and Asia, pearls are amongst the favourite gems of powerful political and business ladies. Designer and trendsetters such as Coco Chanel brought these iridescent gems into everyday wear and helped make them so fashionable today. With so much choice available now, how should pearls be worn at work?

More accessible white pearl jewellery can be also found made from high quality freshwater pearls from China.

A white pearl necklace and earrings are the classic pieces of jewellery for the office. Traditionally these are made from Japanese Akoya pearls, loved for their exquisite round shapes, pink overtone and high lustre. More accessible white pearl jewellery can be also found made from high quality freshwater pearls from China. Larger and more expensive silvery white pearls are cultured in the deep oceans from Thailand to Australia.

There is, though, an astonishing diversity of shapes and colors of pearls available today. Round, drop, oval, button, exotic baroque and circled shapes have made pearls an inspiring gem for jewellery designers. In particular, Tahitian pearls with black, silver or grey colors and shimmering green, blue, purple or peacock overtones provide a more contemporary style.

In general, the larger and rounder the pearl, and the stronger its shine and perfect its surface the more expensive it will be.

As pearls capture light and illuminate the face with a flattering glow, pearl jewellery is versatile and very suitable for the office. Discrete and stylish, round Akoya pearl earring studs will match a wide range of professional attire. A freshwater pearl bracelet with eye-catching natural pink and orange colors will lighten a dark suit. A Tahitian peacock necklace or grey pendant with a sparkling diamond will similarly bring modern refinement to the boardroom.

Buying high quality pearl jewellery can be a daunting process as prices and pearls themselves vary so broadly. In general, the larger and rounder the pearl, and the stronger its shine and perfect its surface the more expensive it will be. To make an investment to last a lifetime, focus on the quality of its lustre and perhaps compromise with your budget on the size or shape of the pearls.

Do you need a little help with your image?

Want to know what to wear?

Want to look and feel great in everything that you wear?

Tired of shopping and still have nothing to wear?

Need to get ahead of your competitors in business?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions have you ever considered an Image Consultation?

An Image Consultation will help you find out the best colours that suit your skin tone, the shapes that suit your figure and the styles that suit your personality.   It is a wonderful confidence boost and certainly helps your self esteem.   It will have a positive effect whatever your age, making you look fresh, alive, alert, and even slimmer and younger.   It will help you work out what suits you and you will always feel great.

If, like most of us you are short on time, it will make shopping so much easier and quicker.   You will be able to buy fashion trends to update your look versus blindly buying what is in the shops or magazines.   You may well end up with less in the wardrobe but have more to wear as all your clothes will co-ordinate with each other.  You will learn how to eliminate mistakes from your wardrobe and how to shop with knowledge.

You will save money as you will not buy ‘bargains’ that lurk guiltily at the back of the wardrobe.  How much have you spent on clothes that you have never worn? It can add up to a surprising amount.   An Image Consultation provides a great return on your investment which lasts a lifetime.

If you are seeking promotion or looking for a career change, have suffered a crisis in confidence or just need a boost then an Image Consultation is for you.

Personal Stylist -Style Icon

Founder of Style Icon, Natalie Robinson, 31 was born and raised in London, England. After studying A Levels in English Literature, Theatre and Psychology she decided to undergo a BA honours degree in Social Policy and Politics. During this period, Natalie took her first tentative foray into fashion by organising a number of well received clothes shows and events. The ensuing success established Natalie’s innate artistic flair and illustrated her gift for visual creativity and styling innovation. In turn, this brief phase instigated her long term passion for fashion and determined her future as a personal stylist.

After leaving university, she immediately started working in Harrods, Knightsbridge for a couple of years as a brand specialist for Donna Karan and other top international designers. This position involved consulting and advising a large number of clientele including high profile names on key trends, whilst helping them shop for their specific lifestyle needs. Having evolved into an accomplished fashion expert, the next natural step was to work as a fashion consultant for Browns clothing boutique in South Molton Street. This prestigious family owned business provided Natalie with an intimate yet cutting edge environment to work in. The owners, Mr and Mrs Burnstein are widely renowned for their infamous buying skills, having propelled many previously anonymous designers such as Donna Karan, John Galliano and Vivienne Westwood into ubiquitous fashion labels. It was commonplace for Natalie to deal with A-list celebrities such as Kylie Minogue, Lionel Ritchie and Sophie Dahl. This wealth of experience proved to be invaluable for Natalie’s business acumen.

Two years on, Natalie seized a golden opportunity to work as a personal shopper for Selfridges. She used this episode to consolidate her client base and contacts within the fashion industry. Working with household names such as ‘Trinny and Susannah’ and liaising with diverse people from all walks of life boosted her creative zeal. Natalie soon began to recognise personal shopping as a far more rewarding skill to solely putting different outfits together. It also meant knowing your customer, their psyche and encouraging women especially those with a low self esteem to become more confident in their own skin, empowering them to rock their individual style. Natalie’s motto is “it’s not what you wear but how you wear it, and how it makes you feel”. She adds “It’s important to feel comfortable in your own clothes as well as in your own skin”.

As Coco Chanel once said “fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening”

In 2005 Natalie set up her own personal shopping service, Style Icon, which didn’t just limit Natalie to shopping in one store but everywhere, for everyone and for everything. Style Icon’s three E’s. It was a risk leaving the security of a nine-five job to set up a business from scratch but apart from being prepared, Natalie is pleased to have made the tough sacrifices to financially support her dream.

The styling opportunities have been endless ever since. The business has enabled her to fulfil the lifestyle needs of businessmen, women and celebrities across the globe. Natalie recently styled Kanya King, founder of The MOBO Awards, in a Scottish theme outfit for a press conference in Glasgow soon to be the new venue for the MOBO awards. Natalie also works for reputable organisations such as:

  • London Fashion Week and The Clothes Show London to offer style advice
  • Reed Specialist Recruitment conducting corporate style presentations
  • Restaurants such as Cinnamon Kitchen and Mint Leaf Lounge based in the city organising lifestyle event
  • Colleges such as Newham College providing fashion-related career advise to the students.

Canary Wharf, Nearest Tube: Canary Wharf, Jubilee Line.

Canary Wharf gets top marks from WATC as a great place to shop for high street brands.  We are not in the least bit surprised that all the major retailers have jumped on the tube from the City and West End and got off at Canary Wharf to serve it’s population of 97,000 hungry office workers and shoppers.  The introduction of the shopping mall just over five years ago and its subsequent extension back in 1996, has enabled Cabot Place and most recently Jubilee Place to rate easily alongside the likes of the Lakeside shopping centre (although on a smaller scale).   However, if you are looking for unique boutiques, you will not find them in either shopping area, but all in all, well worth a visit if you don’t want to street hop in the City or take a tube up the West End to find what you need.

Shopping at Canary Wharf

There are two main areas to shop in Canary Wharf.  The largest one is Cabot Place, the second is Jubilee Place.  Both are within a few minutes walk of Canary Wharf tube.

For more information on shopping at Canary Wharf go to www.mycanarywharf.com.

Cabot Place

Cabot Place runs either side of 1 Canada Place.  The East and West side (the west being the smaller side) are full of high street brands.  As with every shopping centre, all areas are interspersed with fast food outlets and service based retail units (i.e travel agents, opticians, shoe repairers, card and gift shops).

There are four floors to Cabot place, split in to an east side and a west side (the east being the larger area of the two).   The four levels consist of the promenade level, the street level and floors 1 and 2.   Maps are available of the whole complex at each entrance; we would definitely recommend one of these to navigate your way around.

The easy way to approach the mall is from the East side which is where John Lewis is located.  Where it gets a little complicated is how you cross between the East and West side at a street level as you need to walk across the lobby of 1 Canada Square.

Promenade Level – West

As mentioned, the West side is the smaller end of the larger mall and is home to Kate Kuba & Dune for Shoes, Reiss & Hugo Boss for Clothes, Myla for Lingerie and healthy fast food outlet, Leon.

Promenade Level – East

Heading away from the West side on the Promenade level, there seems to be an emphasis around the provision of services, e.g travel agents, opticians, shoe care etc, our particular favourite during our journey onwards was Charbonnel et Walker (Chocolatier).  There are various fast food outlets that exist in this section of the mall, such as Oi Bagel, Pret and soon to open Wasabi.   Pass the exit to Canada Square (and Canary Wharf tube) and again the theme seems to be services, e.g cashpoints
more eat and run outlets, e.g Square Pie moving on to beauty with Nails inc, and Tony & Guy (hair).

The real high street shopping experience seems to start here with clothes shops, Topshop, Hobbs, Ted Baker, Warehouse and Dorothy Perkins.  This theme continues as you walk pass the Canada Place entrance on to Monsoon, Wallis, Oasis and Next.    As you head towards John Lewis (full store over 2 levels) the last stops are Gap and Fat Face.   The Rejuvenation MediSpa or the Gentry Hair & Spa are located here and are a definite recommendation for a treatment at the end of a heavy shopping day.

Street Level – West

Starts with Zara (high fashion), Massimo Dutti (designer wear), The White Company (clothes) and Space NK (Cosmetics/beauty).  Grab a sandwich to remember at the lovely Birley or a quick caffeine boost at Coffee Republic before cutting through the ticket concourse at Canary Wharf station to go back to the East side.

Street Level – East

Across the concourse to the East side for Austin Reed (Workwear), Thomas Pink (Shirts), Gap Kids (Childrens wear), Jones & Church’s (shoes).

Floor 1 – East & West

Zara continues and Tesco metro in the West and SweatyBetty (A WATC recommendation) for yoga, sports and casual wear.  Suits You and Boots.

Floor 2 – East

A dining experience with Pizza Express, ITSU or Chilli’s.  The West side on the 2nd floor is home to Singapore Sam’s and Burger King.

Floor 2/Floor 3

The far East side above John Lewis is Reebok City.  Home to the biggest sports club in Canary Wharf, with Reebok shops, a deli and Spa.

Floor 4

Plateau Bar – Bar and Grill – great views over canary wharf.  Fairly pricey but a great experience nevertheless for fine dining and drinks.

Jubilee Place

Jubilee place across is again a few minutes from Canary Wharf tube (on the same side as Lehman Brothers and Morgan Stanley).  There is only a promenade level at Jubilee Place.  Again there is a definite emphasis on high street brands such as French Connection, Karen Millen, LK Bennett, Reiss, Whistles, TM Lewin, Choice and Phase Eight for clothes, L’Occitane and Jo Malone for Beauty.   Marks and Spencer’s food and a large Boots are also located here, for eateries in Jubilee place, try Wagamama or Nando’s.

Spitalfields, E1, Nearest Tube Station: Liverpool Street

Spitalfields is a wonderful and diverse shopping experience, due to it’s array of unique boutiques and outlets. The fact that the developers deliberately avoided having high street retailers is what makes Spitalfields such a special place to browse and shop, it’s the sort of place you shop when you don’t quite know what it is that you want, one could describe it as shopping by inspiration.

There seems a definite emphasis to promote smaller less well known retailers and sole traders who focus on quality workmanship. The area itself has been undergoing major transformation for what seems like years (17 years in fact). Adding the undercover shopping area between the original buildings has definitely helped to promote Spitalfields offering as a major retail player in the City. The open plan type space with its arty displays dotted here and there is a great place to take in a slice of cake (from Patisserie Valerie) and just sit and watch the City bustle go by.

Different sets of people wash through Spitalfields depending on what day you choose to shop there. During the week you will see mostly the lunchtime crowd and tourists all bustling around the wonderful eateries, shops and market stalls, however come the weekend the suits disappear and the local residents emerge as do visitors from all walks of life. If you visit on a Sunday, make sure you take in the Old market, Petticoat Lane or Brick Lane, all of which are just a few minutes walk away.

Despite the modern feel to Spitalfields, the developers have done their best to retain the heritage of the original shopping units that run around the periphery of the new complex, this creates the perfect fusion of old and new and sort of sums up shopping at Spitalfields.  When shopping in Spitalfields make sure you broaden your trip and investigate the surrounding streets (Lamb Street, Brushfield Street & Commercial Road).

Here you will find the likes of A.Gold (a fantastic olde world deli based on the corner of Gun St) and TeaSmith (Authentic Tea Shop in one of the original Spitalfields units on Lamb Street) and Salvo Jure (a divine Italian restaurant – Brushfield Street) to name just a few of our favourites.  During the summer Spitalfields also runs a series of events and attractions in Bishops Square.  Recent and planned events cover everything from tea dances, to fashion shows and live music. http://www.spitalfields.co.uk/events.php.
