Inspirational Technician Award launched to help fill skills gap in Stem careers

STEMNET is looking to recognise the excellent work of technicians who inspire young people into technical industries by launching a new award.

Supported by Lord Sainsbury’s Gatsby Foundation, the Inspirational Technician Award will be given to somebody who inspires young people into careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics – sectors seen as critical for the future of the UK economy.

The winner, set to be announced in December, will receive a trip to CERN – the European Organisation for Nuclear Research – as part of their prize, courtesy of STFC.

Kirsten Bodley, chief executive of STEMNET, says that the Stem Ambassadors programme has found professionals to be the best people to encourage youngsters into Stem careers.

She added: “We hope that through this award, we will discover a range of passionate role models who can bring about a change in how the public view a career as a technician.”

A recent King’s College study revealed that falling numbers of skilled technicians in the UK workforce are hampering UK research and innovation.
