City Eats | Brasserie Blanc, Threadneedle Street: Review

Brasserie Blanc

Hearty, fuss-free French comfort food served in a smart/casual style setting: Brasserie Blanc Threadneedle Street is the ideal spot for your next business lunch, says Aby Dunsby from Square Mile magazine.

Cheese toastie-serving pop-ups, interactive menus, burlesque dancers twirling through the air while you eat your greens – the eclecticism and originality of London’s food scene is what makes it great. But if you want to eat blindfolded while listening to the mating calls of the Lyrebird, save it for the weekend. Or at least, spare it from your business colleagues.

If you’re looking for a power lunch venue, it’s not about queuing for hours outside the next no-bookings restaurant. Wining and dining is far more relaxing when the dishes are crowd-pleasing – and you don’t need Google to help decipher most of the menu.

Step forward Brasserie Blanc on Threadneedle St, which, after a refurbishment looks shiny and new again. This City restaurant from celebrity chef Raymond Blanc’s chain has a menu that changes with the seasons, but at its heart it serves up generous, comforting portions of classic French fare – just like your maman used to make.

Blanc’s no-nonsense formula is clearly a winning one: when we turned up one mid-week evening, the restaurant’s leather banquettes were teeming, and mainly with a suited and booted post-work crowd.

Our smoked sausage salad was hearty, served alongside a perfect poached egg. Next up: a steaming bowl of boeuf bourguignon and creamy dauphinoise potatoes, washed down with a spicy organic syrah from Chateau Maris. We finished off with a fluffy souffle oozing with rich caramel. Oh la la.

Perfect fodder for your next business lunch. Besides, it’s hard to do business standing outside a pop-up with a cheese toastie in one hand and a craft beer in the other. Believe us, we’ve tried…
