Reinvent yourself as a true professional

reinvent yourself

The new year often prompts us to think about where we are life, and our careers.

Whether you’ve just started a new job, or have been in the same place for twenty years, now is a good time to re-energise, reassess and make sure you start 2017 with a bang.

If you’re a newcomer, take this time to consider how you have been taking to your role, and how you think your new work experience is going. If you’re an old-timer, take a look back at your time in your role, and your highlights and achievements, as this could be the perfect time to move in a new direction and take your work performance to a new level.

Review where you are against your deliverables

Let’s start with a good, old-fashioned list. What is expected of you over the coming year in your workplace? Everything from actual projects to improved attitude. Be brutally honest and try to assess yourself fairly. Mark yourself out of ten or use a traffic light system, however works for you, but keep it simple. This is just to help you assess where you are now.

Make a plan on how to close the gap

You may notice at this point that you are not doing as well as you would like in some areas (nobody is really perfect), and this is normal. Take each deliverable consider what key activities need to be done in order to achieve it. You needn’t go into lots of detail here as this is the skeleton of your plan, but devise a step-by-step action plan for each deliverable expected of you, which will help you gain momentum and allow you to get used to the ‘to-do list’ format.

Set some specific goals for the rest of the year to prepare yourself for the year

The festivities may be over, and work may have begun again, but it is still a great time to prepare for a new year and to redirect things. Set some goals specific to what you want to achieve, and do them in order of importance. You may find it helpful at this point to consult with your manager or supervisor to identify which areas need the most attention. Once you have these goals in place, make them your primary focus for the remainder of the year.

It is important that you align your behaviours and your ambitions. If you are satisfied with your performance overall and just feel that a few loose ends need tying, then not a lot of drastic action is needed. On the other hand, if you know that you have not achieved all that you would like to and want to make a real impression this year, then follow this guide closely for the best results. Concentrate on achieving the challenges you have laid out for yourself, and you are sure to make an impact in 2017!
