Staying motivated in your job search

apply-for-a-job-400x400While gender diversity has been a trending topic for some time, there has never been more support for women in the workplace than there is today. While there is still a long way to go, as we were starkly reminded by Equal Pay Day on Monday, businesses are truly committed to making equality at work a reality. Equally as important, young women today have a wealth of role models to take inspiration from – from the autumn release of The Suffragette film and the centenary celebrations of the WI, to the growing success of the Women’s Equality Party, inspirational women can teach us all thing or two in the world of recruitment.

Work-Life Lessons From A Truly Inspirational Woman

In September, supreme Heptathlon champion, Jessica Ennis-Hill surprised herself, and the world, by winning gold at the Bird’s Nest in Beijing to become second time World Champion…just 12 months after giving birth to her son. Branded “Super-mum”, Ennis-Hill successfully balances a blossoming career and family life, with a plan carved ahead leading right up to her retirement. This month alone, Ennis-Hill has won the Sunday Times and Sky Sports Sportswoman of the Year award. To say she is an inspiration is an understatement.

How does this relate to my job search?

RecruitmentRevolution.com say that what you can take away from this is planning, persistence and tenacity! It may be a candidate market out there, but they still see high application numbers for vacancies throughout the UK. Whilst the job hunt may cause some candidates to feel despondent, it’s time to channel the positive mental attitude of an athlete and visualize success. Could Ennis-Hill have been awarded her gold medal without intense training and preparation? Hell no! So remember the old adage, “fail to plan: plan to fail”! The UK economy is continuing its recovery and there are jobs aplenty, so the right role is out there. Though you’ve heard this advice many times before, RecruitmentRevolution.com want to remind you to never give up – your perfect position is out there, if you’re looking in the right places. They know – they see it every day!

Style and Suitability once you’ve got a foot in the door

The huge press coverage surrounding Stella McCartney’s Olympic Sports Design highlighted the myriad considerations for what to wear when you’re dressing for success. We may not all wear trainers and sports bras as typical interview or work attire but we should all have a ‘uniform’ for different situations. When it comes to interview fashion, make sure your outfit is fit for purpose. Is the company dress-code Formal Business Attire or Office Casual? Are you meeting them on Dress Down Friday? And the questions don’t stop there. They say that in sports, red teams win more matches and that even in interviews the colour of your clothing can have a major impact on success. For a woman in business, it can be tricky to gauge what to wear for work but recent studies suggest that you should always avoid orange, brown and, ironically, the winner’s shade – red. Orange may be the new black, but it has a low correlation with confidence; brown can come across as a bit dull or ‘beige’, lacking imagination; whilst red suggests a combative nature – perhaps why it makes for a great uniform in a sporting environment. But don’t sweat it – if your favourite trouser suit is brown, don’t take this advice as re[a]d! While these surveys may have some interesting findings, it’s vital to feel confident and comfortable on interview day too: RecruitmentRevolution.com’s clients cite confidence as one of the most important attributes to convey during the first meeting, so make sure that your outfit choice makes you feel good about yourself.

Prospects for Females in The Workplace

Now that you’ve heard how you can take inspiration from Jessica Ennis-Hill for your job search you’re probably wondering where the opportunities are. You’ll be pleased to hear it’s the ladies that are coming up trumps in the world of e-commerce. More women run e-commerce businesses now than ever before and not only that – they’re hiring… more than their male counterparts! In addition, large companies such as Lloyds are making a concerted effort to hire more women in senior positions so, channel your inner Ennis-Hill and aim high in your career – you’re being searched for…women are in demand.
